Summer Camp is going virtual this year!

summer camp museo kidsWe’re working hard to build online activities that will keep your kids & teens engaged for several hours every day of the camp. Our presenters and partners are making videos, designing at-home projects and putting together other games and activities that will allow campers to learn, create and connect with each other.

What to expect:
Each participant will get an activities kit full of all the supplies you’ll need for all camp activities.
Summer-camp museo kids 2All online activities will be accessible on any smartphone, tablet or computer.
iPads are available to borrow for families who need them for camp.
Younger campers will probably need some guidance from parents on how to participate, but older kids and teens should be able to enjoy the day’s content fairly independently.
Just like every year, camp will culminate in a final performance of what they’ve learned on July 17th. We are still working on designing the presentation, but it will also be virtual and you can enjoy it from the comfort of your own home.

Summer Arts + Culture Camp, Colombia

Museo de las Americas’ 11th annual Summer Arts + Culture Camp 2020 will explore Colombia, a land of many riches. Over two-thirds of the country is covered in natural ecosystems, including part of the Amazon rainforest. Colombia is home to one-tenth of the world’s wildlife and it is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world! This country is not only vibrant in its wildlife, but also in its people and culture. The country is made up of a combination of African, European and Indigenous influence. Its cultural life is woven from traditions that span a mountain range and two oceans! These many traditions have impacted local celebrations such as Carnival, as well as Colombian music and dance. Cumbia, a form of dance, is strongly influenced by African culture and finds its rhythm through the use of drums alongside other instruments. The Vallenato, which translates to “born in the valley,” was originally a method of spreading news between towns. Its melody is born in the melody of the accordion as it rings through the open air.

Students will begin to understand Colombia’s environmental and cultural riches through their four classes: visual arts, music, dance, and theatre. They will observe and study the amazing stonework and metalwork that has been uncovered in San Augustín, one of the most valuable pre-Columbian archaeological sites in the country, which was influenced by the Spanish baroque style in urban architecture and contemporary artists like Fernando Botero, known for his voluminous figures. Students will grasp the basics of cumbia and the vallenato and learn the steps to the accompanying dances. Finally, students will learn about the environment and current issues surrounding the Amazon and the people who are dependent upon the life it brings. Their three weeks of learning will culminate in a Final Performance on July 17th, 2020.

Join us June 29th-July 17th from 9:00am to 1:00pm at Museo de las Americas and travel to Colombia for three weeks. Immerse your children in the rhythm and life of a vibrantly brilliant and rich country where they will develop creative, social and leadership skills through our multidisciplinary arts and culture camp. Lunch will be provided. Registration is $350.00 per child, scholarships are available.
