When I was first asked if I would like to review a concert performance by Lake Street Drive at the Dillon Reservoir Amphitheater, my first reaction was, Who? Never heard of them. After doing a bit of research and sampling their music on YouTube I was more than interested in this multi-genre musical experience. The idea of traveling to Dillon was also appealing as it would make for a great weekend getaway, so why not?
Turns out the band is incredibly popular selling out venue after venue across the US and around the world and have been doing so for a number of years. In 2013 and 2014, they played over 300 gigs in over 175 different cities, spread between 43 states and eight countries. Their Bad Self Portraits tour sold out in 40 venues at the start of 2014. Many of their 2024 tour dates are also sold out.
Lake Street Dive is made up of vocalist Rachael Price, bassist/background vocalist Bridget Kearney, drummer/background vocalist Mike Calabrese, keyboardist/vocalist Akie Bermiss, and guitarist/background vocalist James Cornelison. The press release describes their new album as, “On Good Together the band arrives with a renewed sense of purpose, aiming to highlight our shared humanity against the social divisions pulling us apart. The ethos of Good Together can be described as “joyful rebellion.”
Over the weekend, the acclaimed Lake Street Dive band took the stage at the beautiful amphitheater in Dillon, Colorado with the reservoir serving as the backdrop to perform for a sold out audience featuring their latest hit songs “Good Together,” “Dance With a Stranger” and “Help Is On The Way” from their new album, Good Together, which is out now.
Lake Street Dive also performed to a sold out crowd at the Red Rocks Amphitheater a couple of days later on July 21, 2024. Their inaugural headline performance at Madison Square Garden is happening on September 14. They’ll also be playing to a sold-out crowd at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on July 27, 2024. The audience at the Dillon Reservoir Amphitheater received the band with heartfelt enthusiasm as the band connected with them intimately with their varied collection of music and musicians featuring their dynamic songwriting chemistry and genre-bending mastery, pushing the boundaries of pop, soul, jazz and folk music. Their music reminded me of that of Bonnie Raitt, The Pointer Sisters and Carole King. Vocalist Rachael Price told the Dillon audience Colorado was one of their favorite places to perform while reminding them that the first time they performed here, there were only two people in the audience. Apparently, it changed their approach to writing and creating music.
The group was formed in 2004 as a “free country band”; they intended to play country music in an improvised, avant-garde style. That didn’t work out to well so they decided to make music that would appeal and entertain a wider audience. It obviously worked.
With tens of millions of streams, an acclaimed discography, and an enduring worldwide fanbase, the Lake Street Dive band consisting of Rachael Price, Bridget Kearney,Mike Calabrese, Akie Bermiss and James Cornelison have become an exhilarating force in popular music.
After thoroughly enjoying their performance, I wondered, why have I not heard of the Lake Street Dive before. Where in the heck have I been all these years they have been around. I have been missing out.
