CO Immigrant Justice Groups Hold “Families Stand Up” Rally, Announcing City, State and Federal Demands

Led by the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition (CIRC) and 30 other partner groups, over 100 activists rallied for Immigrant Justice at the State Capitol today November 16th. They called on elected officials at the city, state and national levels to push for immigration reform, to stop deportations and the separation of families, to protect all immigrants, to welcome refugees and to oppose anti-immigrant efforts.

Speakers at the “Families Stand Up” rally called upon elected officials to stand with immigrants. They praised Denver Mayor Michael Hancock for his recent video statement in support of keeping Denver a safe and welcoming for refugees and immigrants, and then listed a number of demands including:

Called on all mayors in Colorado to continue in the example of Hancock’s leadership and to support keeping immigrant families together.
State lawmakers are asked to restore the SB-251 Driver’s License Program expanding the number of offices and appointments available for qualified residents.
Congress is asked to put an immediate stop on deportations, to stop the expansion of immigration detention, and to end to the use of For-Profit Prisons to detain immigrants.
The Executive Branch is asked to allow all Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients to work while on a path to citizenship and to pardon all individuals currently in deportation proceedings.

“We want to keep America to be a welcoming and safe country for both refuImmigration Rally 11_16_2016 (13)gees and immigrants,” said Oscar Juarez-Luna of CIRC. “Colorado stood up against hate, now we need Colorado to stand up for us..”

“Our state delegation must stand with us at this critical moment in history,” said Ezzie Dominguez of CIRC. “We demand rights, relief and reform for all the families and communities in Colorado; we want dignity and respect, not deportation and family separation.”

Highlighted speakers at the rally included Kerry Gutierrez, a first time voter; Mateo Lozano, a DACA recipient; and Guadalupe Lopez of Mojados Unidos and the American Friends Service Committee.

Grupos de Justicia para Inmigrantes de CO conferencia de prensa “Las Familias Se Levantan” Anuncian demandas municipales, estatales y federales

Dirigido por la Coalición de los Derechos de Inmigrantes de Colorado (CIRC) y otros 30 grupos socios, más de 100 personas de la comunidad se reunieron hoy para la Justicia de Inmigrantes en el Capitolio del Estado en Denver. Hicieron un llamado a los funcionarios electos a nivel municipal, estatal y nacional para que impulsen la reforma migratoria, detener las deportaciones y la separación de familias, proteger a todos los inmigrantes, bienvenir a los refugiados y oponerse a los esfuerzos anti-inmigrantes.

Las personas en la conferencia de prensa “Las Familias se Levantan” pidieron a los funcionarios electos que se unieran a los inmigrantes. Elogiaron al alcalde de Denver, Michael Hancock, por su reciente declaración en video en apoyo de mantener Denver segura y acogedora para los refugiados e inmigrantes, y luego enumeró una serie de demandas, entre ellas:
Llamado a todos los alcaldes en Colorado para continuar en el ejemplo del liderazgo de Hancock y apoyar a las familias inmigrantes.
Se pide a los legisladores estatales que restablezcan el Programa de Licencia de Conducir SB-251 ampliando el número de oficinas y citas disponibles para residentes calificados.
Se pide al Congreso que ponga fin inmediato a las deportaciones, detenga la expansión de la detención de inmigrantes y ponga fin al uso de las prisiones con fines de lucro para detener a los inmigrantes.
