MTV’s Video Music Awards (VMA) had a showcase of Latin talent at Radio City Music Hall on August 20, 2018 in New York City with some of the world’s biggest Latin stars winning big and performing to the live audience of music industry peeps and to the millions that saw it on TV and online.
Latin artist dominated the evening with awards and great performances. Cardi B led the list with 10 nominations. Here are the 2018 winners.
Best Latin Video of the year: J Balvin (ft.Willy William) – “Mi Gente”
“Mi Gente” wins best Latin video of the year. However, this video had the whole world dancing when it came out in 2018 and will continue to do so for years to come. Its beats are just too contagious.
Best Artist of the Year: Camila Cabello
This year was Camila’s breakout year after being part of the internationally famous girl band Fifth Harmony. Camila went solo this year and we all see what is happening.
Best New Artist of the Year: Cardi B
Cardi B received ten nominations, the most of any artist in this year’s VMA. Cardi, has been making money moves for sure. She looks amazing for a woman that gave birth just two months ago. We have Cardi for some time to come, this lady is a trooper. Just a year ago, who would have thought, that she would be right up there in popularity with Bruno Mars, Drake, Beyoncé, JLO, Lady Gaga, Jayz and all the to music icons of today. She not only has, she is winning awards and is the talk of the town and firing up social media every day.
Best Collaboration of the year: Jennifer Lopez ft. DJ Khaled & Cardi B – “Dinero”
This is the song about Dinero, (Benjamin’s, cash, dollars, dough, mint, moolah). However you say it, everyone wants more of it and everyone is digging this hit.
Best Video of the year: Camila Cabello ft. Young Thug – “Havana”
Cabello also scored a Best Choreography nomination for Havana, but by taking home the top prize of “artist of the year” we are sure we will be hearing much more to come from this Cuban born, now living in Miami.
Colombian star Maluma became the first ever solo artist to perform in Spanish with his hit “Felices los 4” at the 2018 VMA Awards, and check out this clip below of him and this year’s “artist of the year” winner Camila Cabello Dancing sexy together as Maluma performs live mixing it up with the audience.
Jennifer Lopez accepts the Vanguard Award
(Side note: keep in mind JLO turns 50 next year, not only does she look amazing, she can still out-perform mini-divas half her age).
Lopez held up her Moon Man trophy and said, “I grew up on MTV, and this is really a tremendous honor for me. It has been an incredible journey of dreaming my wildest dreams and then kind of watching them come true. Music, acting, performing, this career has always been kind of an obsession for me.”
Then she said that when her children came into her life, “Everything changed.” She said, “I knew I had to be better. I knew I had to go higher, I had to be stronger than I had been before.” The singer thanked her children and said, “The future is brighter now because of you,” before thanking all of her friends, family and collaborators.
She thanked Alex and said, “You’re like my twin soul. We are like mirror images of each other … There’s so much more to experience and there’s no one else I’d rather do that with.” Watch her acceptance speech below:
