La Misión, Art Work Inspired by the Spanish Monarchy Opens August 6th at Museo de las Americas

Museo de las Americas is proud to announce the grand reopening of the Tragen Folk Art Gallery with a new exhibit entitled La Misión, generously funded by the Tragen Family Trust. This exhibit explores the artwork produced as a result of the Spanish monarchy sending priests (Padres) to convert the indigenous Puebloan residents of the Rio Grande River Valley.

museo mission artFeaturing roughly twenty unique pieces of art that date from the 17th Century to the present, La Misión explores the narrative of the peoples living in the Rio Grande River Valley. Featuring artwork from Museo’s private collection, the exhibit examines the visual language unique to the colonial artwork of New Mexico. The gallery has been made reminiscent of a mission church interior, to provide an appropriate space and context for the many Santos, retablos and other artworks in the exhibit.

Museo open“Museo’s private collections are a treasure meant for the entire community to enjoy. We cherish each piece in this exhibit, not just as a beautiful object, but also as a piece of our culture and history. Donors to our private collection bring value to our community for generations to come and uphold pride in our cultural heritage” says Museo Executive Director Claudia Moran.

“I am thrilled to share the beautiful religious artworks in Museo’s private collection. These pieces belong with the community, where they can delight and educate the public. The artwork honors and celebrates the rich cultural legacy of the peoples of the Rio Grande Valley” says Laura Beacom, Curator of Collections.
