One of the major attractions of the National Western Stock Show each year is The Mexican Rodeo Extravaganza. This production truly has it all, in one place, in one show. It’s an all in one rodeo experience. From mutton busting, to bull riding, bareback riding, the Westernaires trick riding and even matador bull fights. All in all, there are 25 distinct performances over the two hour extravaganza. Produced, directed and choreographed Jerry Diaz and Family this year’s extravaganza entertained two near capacity shows January 7, 2024. (see photo gallery)

It was a perfect summer day with temps in the low 80’s as many people who had not seen each other since pre-covid days came together to enjoy a fun filled day and evening long concert extravaganza that went on for eight hours.
It has been a long time, since before Covid 19, that community has been able to come together for day and evening long event, 2pm-9pm, that allows people to reconnect, to see old friends, old acquaintances and make new ones. It’s the type of gathering that people will talk about long after everyone has gone home.

It’s a story about aspiring immigrant musicians struggling to make a life and a name for themselves in New York City shortly after world war II. This new production, loosely based on the 1977 Martin Scorsese film of the same name staring Robert De Niro and Liza Minnelli. It features some new songs lyrics or additional lyrics by a famous Broadway talent: Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of “In the Heights” and “Hamilton.

Playwright/director Luis Valdez can. Through his work with El Teatro Campesino and his films (La Bamba, Zoot Suit), he has left an indelible mark on the annals of Chicano theater and cinema.
