May 10th Event Kicks-Off National Women’s Health Week in Denver
April 23, 2015 – DENVER – Clínica Tepeyac is hosting its fourth annual Adelante 5K Walk and Run, Community Expo and Kids Half-Mile Fun Run on Sunday, May 10. The event takes place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Stapleton Recreation Center in Denver (5090 Broadway) and is open to men, women and families.
The event takes place on the first day of National Women’s Health Week, which kicks off on Mother’s Day each year, and is a national effort to raise awareness and empower women to make their health a top priority. Rather than your typical, calorie-laden brunch, Adelante is a healthy alternative Mother’s Day festivity that celebrates all that our mother’s do for the health of our families.
“Many of our participants begin training as a group ten weeks prior to the race, which builds a real sense of community, as well as a commitment towards making healthier lifestyle choices,” said Jim Garcia, executive director and founder of Clínica Tepeyac.
According to the Food, Research and Action Center, 77 percent of U.S. Hispanic women are obese or overweight. “Mothers often put their families’ health above their own. Adelante allows us to return the favor and do so in a culturally relevant way, with extended family members coming out together,” said Garcia. “We’re very proud of all the families that plan to participate in the Adelante 5K. Physical activity is one of the best ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle – why not have fun at the same time?”
Additional steps women can take to improve their health include eating a nutritious diet, paying attention to their mental health, and getting regular health screenings.
Adelante event sponsors include Denver Health, Univision Colorado, Federico & Cindy Peña, Union Pacific, Councilwoman Judy Montero, Save-A-Lot, and Educa Radio. Adelante team sponsors include American Diabetes Association and CREA Results.
